Offsite ads fees only apply when the sale came from an Etsy offsite ad (usually 15%, or 12% for shops over $10,000 a year) and are capped at $100 per order. Processing is also charged on any sales tax the buyer pays; leave tax out here because it is not your money. Each fee is rounded to the cent.
How it works
Order total = item price + shipping charged. Transaction fee = order total × 6.5%. Processing fee = order total × 3% + $0.25. Offsite ads fee = order total × ads % (max $100). Total fees = transaction + processing + listing + offsite ads. Profit = order total − total fees − item cost − postage. Margin = profit ÷ order total.
Worked example (the values above): a $25.00 item with $5.00 shipping is a $30.00 order. The transaction fee is $30.00 × 6.5% = $1.95, processing is $30.00 × 3% + $0.25 = $1.15, and the listing fee is $0.20, so Etsy keeps $3.30 and you receive $26.70. Take off the $6.40 the item cost you and the $4.20 postage and your profit is $16.10, a 53.7% margin ($16.10 ÷ $30.00).
If the same sale came through an offsite ad at 15%, add $30.00 × 15% = $4.50: fees become $7.80 and profit drops to $11.60, a 38.7% margin. To work backwards from the margin you want, use the handmade pricing calculator. See also all calculators.
